Leading by Example
We’ve all been told that our children should consume certain foods and be active in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle; we want them alert during their school day, wearing shiny, pearly- white grins, and to avoid what may be one of our worst fears for our children— obesity. But as parents, we very seldom think of ourselves. What about our health and well-being?
As mommy or daddy, our job is to protect our children; in order to do this, we need to make sure we’re taken care of first. It’s nearly impossible instruct orders to someone if we don’t believe them ourselves— that’s why it’s important to practice what we preach. I’ve heard someone say, “If you were on a plane with your child and it just so happens that the oxygen masks were dropped down, you should help yourself first and then assist the child”. My first thought was, How selfish is that?! I couldn’t comprehend the idea of thinking of myself before my little girl. But as I thought more about it, the idea makes sense. I can’t take care of my baby girl unless I’m taken care of first. With that being said, I make sure that I maintain a healthy diet and stay physically fit so that I am capable of being the best mommy I can be. I also want to set precedence for who my daughter will become in the future (possibly a mother to children of her own one day?) and show her how great it actually feels to be healthy!
I have carried the idea of taking care of myself as well as my daughter ever since I have given birth to her and I’m so glad I have. I’ve started her off with healthy greens and different courses very early on— now she is open to try anything at least once. Juice diluted with water was a biggie too; my daughter was never big on sugary drinks or soda and she actually likes to drink water. We do yoga and stretches at her request, which is nice, considering it’s something we both enjoy. Leading by example has made me feel like such an incredible mother and I’m so glad it’s helped me to raise my beautiful, vigorous young lady!
